How About a Trip Back to Weissglass Stadium?

Weissglass Stadium Models from George LeBlanc

Bruno Brackey #71 leads Cliff Ryerson#1 followed by Howie Brown #8 through the turn at Weissglass.

Cliff Ryerson (who also ran at Freeport, LI) takes the checkered flag just in front of Howie Brown in the #8.

Lou Bonin in the #3 leads Cliff Ryerson #1 with Tiny Milano on the outside of Ryerson

Dick Hirsch drove this 49 Ford Sedan owned by Joe McKinney at Weissglass and New Egypt Speedway

Jimmy Long Sr replaced his #25 sedan with this #L-1 coupe.   Jimmy's son continued the tradition becoming a very strong competitor on both dirt and asphalt.

1964 Weissglass Stadium Champion Tiny Milano also ran at Middletown and won a main event in a black & red Falcon #27.  Tiny continued campaigning at Middletown thru the 86 season.

These models were built by former driver George LeBlanc and represent the action from Weissglass Stadium that was located in Staten Island, NY.   George actually built these models back in the 60's and as a result of learning how to letter these models by hand, George was eventually asked to letter full size race cars which led to a business that George has been involved in ever since!

NOTE FROM 3-Wide:  I received the following from George (who built these models) in response to our "Local Garage Trivia Question" on 7/12/04 that I thought you guys would enjoy:

Back in the early sixties me and a few buddies rode our bicycles all over Staten Island's North shore looking for signs of stock car activity before Weissglass opened on the second Saturday night of May.

One of our favorite stops was Sunny's Gulf on Richmond Terrace under the Bayonne Bridge. There was always a few Ford Coupes and sedans laying around that we knew were going to be stock cars very shortly.  One spring there was a white '40 Ford coupe street rod sitting there with a louvered hood and we wondered if this was a future Weissglass car.  Sure enough, a month later it emerged as Jack Zakian's beautiful candy blue 17A, louvered hood, whitewall slicks, and all.  It was a beauty.

That same summer three # 21's came out of that station for Johnny Popick to drive.

Another hot bed of activity was Forest Esso.  Most of Dennis Dibrizzi's #69s came out of there and the K-1 sedan.  We watched them build them from bare frames up.  The track promoter was also buying old New Jersey Stock Cars every winter so we kept an eye on Barker Street to see what came in.   Best of all, we always carried a camera and took pictures of every car we found and   I love to look at these pictures 45 years later. I'm even sitting in some of the cars in the pictures.

They were great days and the race track made Staten Island a good place to grow up.  I could go on and on about other yards that were full of coupes that ended up at Weissglass.  Thanks Joe for giving us oldtimers a place to record our memories.

(Thank You George) -  3-Wide
