Comments: Comment:  No one could have predicted what was about to happen to the sport of stock car racing.  To those of us that were there, it was coming down to another one of those crazy Daytona 500 finishes... Having seen David Pearson and Richard Petty take each other out on the final lap just a few years earlier, you just never knew for sure what would happen at Daytona...

Photographer Hank Winecker took this amazing shot as Donnie and Cale took the white flag of the 1979 Daytona 500.  It not only captures the dog fight between the 1st & 2nd place cars, but it captures the crowd's energy and anticipation.

As we've all heard told many times, this was the first year that the 500 would be seen live on CBS, and with much of the country snowed in by severe mid February storms, the TV audience became more than just the diehards.  It became most anyone who turned on their TV that afternoon.  And both the diehards, and those tuning in for their first time would not be disappointed as Donnie and Cale would make contact about 20 seconds after this picture was taken, causing there cars to bounce off of each other (as called by CBS's Ken Squire) sliding up into the 3rd turn wall, and finally coming to rest along he inside grass of turn 3.

Both driver's climbed from their cars unhurt, and were also joined by Donnie's brother Bobby and what followed would be branded simply as "The Fight."

A few punches were thrown, maybe even a couple of kicks, with the end result being Richard Petty winning another 500, and NASCAR winning it all.
