Comments: The always spectacular Tex Enright in flight in this late 60's or very early 70's Flemington photo provided by Kevin Budden.  For those who didn't get to see him, Tex would start each race from the racing surface with a leap in the air and the waving of the green to the quickly approaching cars.  He would take a few steps to the right as the cars raced by before scurrying back up the starter's stand to flag the rest of the race.  Tex will always be remembered as being a big part of the show.

11/19/04 3-Wide Had a great opportunity to talk to 70's and 80's favorite Billy O who told me a neat story where he gives credit to Tex for helping to get his Modified career in gear!

Seems back in the late 60's or early 70's, Billy was struggling in the modified ranks (I don't think Billy ran sportsman at all!).  One night at East Windsor he finally qualified through his heat and wouldn't you know it, Billy O was slated to start on the pole.

Making his way out of the pits to the frontstretch, Billy O lined up last.... thinking he'd play it safe and just kinda stay out of the way of the other drivers.  Well, as Billy tells it, Tex jumps down from the starting stand and walked back to him and slapped the side of his car and pointed to the front row.  Politely, Billy O motioned Tex over so he could let him know that he thought it best if he started in the rear.

Upon hearing the news, Tex said, "Get up there on the front row right now -   I"ll let you know if you do something wrong!"

That might have been the same night that Billy lead the whole deal right up until the last lap (where he thought the white flag was the checker and slowed down only to be overtaken by Will Cagle or one of the other hotshoes of the day.)  Either way, with a little help from Tex, Billy O got the confidence needed on that night to know that he belonged out there in the Modified ranks, with the very best of the day.
