Here's something that you may find interesting.... George Koyt
sent over these plans that were created to create a 2 mile speedway in 1914
at what appears to be the intersection of Street Rd and York Rd. Looks
like it was going to be quite a facility with seating for approx 80,000 for
the big track... a stadium inside the big track with seating for 40,000, a 1
mile horse racing track, horse stables, aviation pylons (for air races?),
baseball, golf, tennis... and a train terminal, along with an "observation
train"???? Did anyone else ever hear of plans to build a 2 mile oval located at the intersection of Street and York Road in Warminster, PA? It would have been like an Indy of the East! In order to match the plans as drawn, I had to spin the Google Image so that the top of the image is actually East, and North is to the left.... You can see the railroad traveling kind of diagonally from the upper left to the lower right to kind of get an idea of how everything lines up with the intersection. |

02.13.09 | Rich Reinhart | I drive through that intersection once at least once a day I never would have imagined something like that was planned for that area. Now its your usual urban sprawl of 7/11`s Jiffy Lubes, Burger Kings etc... |
02.13.09 | Tim Weber | The track would have been north of County Line Road, which
puts it in Warminster, Bucks county. That section of Warminster is
still known as the Speedway section! The aerial photo is correct, and Evergreen Ave. (which runs parallel to York Rd) is currently where the front straight would have been. Imagine the possibilities. Nothing there today that would even hint of there ever being a track planned for it, but if you're as familiar with this area as I am, you could imagine it fitting quite nicely. |
02.14.09 | Paul | The track construction was started then halted due to the war (WW1) but never finished, remnants of the track supposedly be found behind Warminster Auto Body off of Street road near Park road. I was informed that there rear lot is (was) made up of part of a 'tunnel turn" (concrete)? |
02.15.09 | Kevin Mc | Indy was 2.5 miles and opened in 1909. The 500 started in 1911 but they ran quite a few races from 1909-1910 |

I grew up in Speedway Section of Warminster on North
side of Elm Street. Across the street on the South side of elm Street going
1/2 a block to Evergreen Street and almost to Date Street there was a huge
field that had a curved wall that stuck out of the ground about 18 inches.
We used to Balance walk it all the time. It was pretty rural there during
the late 50's. |
